Change: The Passage of Time in the Garden by Sydney Eddison

Picture
"In a fast paced, footloose world, a life and garden like mine are relatively rare. I have been rooted to the same spot for 50 years, and the garden has grown up around me. I knew nothing about making a garden and had no training in horticulture. In 1960,my English husband and I bought an old farmhouse with a red barn and a few wild acres. The following year, we began clearing away the brush and exposing old field stone walls--The handiwork of a generation of farmers. The garden simply evolved. All living things change and that is what a garden is all about. I am going to show and tell you the story of change in my garden from 1961 to 2011."-Sydney Eddison

Sydney Eddison is the author of Gardening for a Lifetime and six other books on gardening.  Her garden has been featured in magazines and on television. A former scene designer and drama teacher, Eddison lectures widely and is a frequent contributor to Fine Gardening magazine and other publications.

We often hear about drainage and and the effects of runoff on lakes, streams and ponds.  One solution to this problem is a rain garden. Rain gardens are all the rage right now!  This presentation will give an overview of the concepts behind rain gardening and go into more depth about plants that are appropriate for using in our harsh climate.

David Campbell is owner of Adirondack Botanicals, Landscape Design and Installation, located in Schroon Lake, NY.

Forty Uncommon Natives Plants for Your Garden by Drew Monthie

Picture
In the world of the big box store, availability of unusual plants is not only limited, but often non-existent and typically consists of plants from Europe and Asia. Our Northeast flora is very diverse and better suited to our climate ,but even good nurseries may only carry a small cross section of native species.  This presentation will explore some of the lesser known species that you should be looking for in your local nurseries to encourage them to grow more natives.

Drew Monthie is the owner of Ecologic Consulting in Glens Falls, NY, specializing in Sustainable, Ecologically based, Plant Driven Design and an adjunct professor for SUNY Empire State College teaching in the fields of Botany, Horticulture and Ecology.

The Other Seasons of the Garden presented by Greg Greene

Many gardeners have no problem buying blooming plants in season, but are often stumped about how to make the other seasons (early spring and fall) of the garden more interesting.  This presentation will explore options to extend the garden season.

Greg Greene is a passionate plantsman and the owner of Wild Ginger Design in Niskayuna New York.  He specializes in both shade and formal gardens.
